Here’s my speech from today’s No Kings Day rally in Eugene. The turnout was great, so now it’s time to do the behind the scenes work that compliments these protests. We need both in order to create the change we want to see.

Merchants of Doubt is about the corporate disinformation campaigns that aimed to shut down efforts to solve environmental and public health issues. It talks about a wide range of issues spanning the 20th century, from the hole in the ozone layer to the effects of secondhand smoke to climate change, and shows how companies collaborated to halt progress on regulating dangers to public health. It’s an incredibly informative book, and while it moves a little bit slowly at times, it’s still worth reading.

Cracked is about the many horrendous impacts of dams and the movements taking them down worldwide. It outlines how dams destroy natural ecosystems, worsen climate change, create public safety hazards, harm local communities (especially indigenous communities), and funnel money to the rich. It also details successful dam removal movements of all sizes around the world, providing hope for a future without dams. This book is incredibly eye-opening, and I highly recommend it.

Last Monday, I testified at the City of Eugene's City Council Meeting. I mostly talked about how Eugene needs to call on the University of Oregon to take swift climate action, since UO has been reluctant to do so, but I also mentioned the need to electrify buildings.

Happy Earth Day! Remember, Earth Day is about the Earth and all of the life that inhabits it. So today, spend some time outside enjoying all of this life with people you love. So set your phone down, ignore the corporate lying and attention-grabbing, and try to appreciate the beauty of life.

Happy Earth Day! For today's recommendation, I figured I'd share a film about a wonderful corner of our planet. Great Bear Rainforest: Land of the Spirit Bear is about the wonderfully complex and beautiful forest ecosystem found on the Canadian West Coast. It explores the workings of the ecosystem, the ancient relationship between the ecosystem and its indigenous inhabitants, and shows how amazing our world is when properly conserved. I highly recommend watching this.

The University of Oregon is updating their heating system, and we’re urging them to implement the heating system option that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions the most (option 4). We held a rally outside of the UO Board of Trustees (they make all of the major decisions for the university) meeting this morning and then gave public comments to the Board about why they need to choose option 4 and reduce campus’ greenhouse gas emissions.

Glen Canyon Rediscovered shows a group’s journey to uncover the wonders of Glen Canyon that were lost when it was dammed and flooded to create Lake Powell. It follows some adventurous river kayakers as they explore Glen Canyon and its tributary rivers and talk to local experts about the dam’s negative impacts. You can watch this film on @natgeo’s YouTube Channel, and I definitely recommend it as it does a good job balancing the adventure and conservation sides of the story.

Hemp can create sustainable building materials and textiles while sequestering carbon and returning nutrients to the soil. This is an incredibly inspiring film (which Patagonia films usually are) and I highly recommend watching it. You can watch it on @patagonia’s YouTube channel.

This is a fascinating and relevant film about a vital part of our democracy. Even if you don’t live in California, it’s worth watching, since many US states have similar lawsuit laws. You can watch this film on YouTube.

It is a fascinating show that delves into the differences in family structures, survival tactics, threats, and more between elephants from the savannahs of Africa, the rainforests of Africa, the deserts of Africa, and the rainforests of Asia. This is the sequel to Secrets of the Whales, another wonderful National Geographic show. I highly recommend watching this, which you can do on Disney+.

My first climate rally in college!!! I’m so excited to get more involved in the climate action scene in Eugene. There are so many people and organizations (both on and off campus) doing amazing work, and everyone I’ve met has been wonderful. Yesterday’s rally was incredibly inspiring, and it filled me with hope to see that there were so many working to make the world better.

For those who weren’t at the rally, it was about the need for the University of Oregon to transition its heating system to renewable energy. The heating system currently uses gas boilers, and it is the largest emitter of fossil fuels in the city of Eugene (which is the second largest city in Oregon). The university is looking into shifting the system away from fossil fuels, but we need to keep speaking up and pushing for change because some of the university’s proposed plans are not ambitious enough.

Again, I absolutely loved this book, and I highly recommend reading it as soon as you can. It’s well worth it.

This is one of my favorite environmental films. It talks about why the North Cascades in Washington are unique geologically and ecologically, shares the indigenous history of the region, explains how these mountains were saved from the logging, mining, and other development that ravaged much of the Pacific Northwest. The cinematography of this film is mind-blowing, and the storytelling is somehow even better. I cannot recommend this more highly. You can watch it on Aidin Robbins’ YouTube Channel.

It brings me so much hope to see people of all walks of life from every corner of the globe joining together to fight for the future. While I couldn’t make it to a strike today, I needed to to something, so I stood at a busy intersection with a climate action sign for over an hour. While this isn’t quite as impactful or empowering as going to an organized protest is, I find it very valuable, as it brings the global climate strike to an area where people are just going about their daily lives. I’m sure most of the people that drove by me today didn’t know that there were marches around the world today, so me being at that street corner showed them that people are fighting for their futures. Me standing by a road isn’t going to change the world, but it will make people think about climate change when they otherwise wouldn’t have, and that’s still a positive impact.

There’s a new national monument near the Grabd Canyon in Arizona!

The Arctic: Our Last Great Wilderness is about the wonderfully beautiful and complex ecosystem of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in northern Alaska, and the need to better protect this area. This film shows how amazing this natural area is, and explains how we need to prevent oil expansion and climate change from destroying this great wilderness. While this area is better protected now than it was when this film was made, it is still not completely safe.

The Arctic: Our Last Great Wilderness is about the wonderfully beautiful and complex ecosystem of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in northern Alaska, and the need to better protect this area.
